There’s no denying that social media has found its way into many of our lives these days. From keeping up with old friends and family on Facebook to sharing funny videos on TikTok or photos on Instagram, we’re becoming a more connected society - especially while we can’t be with each other the way we used to before the pandemic. But social media isn’t just good for keeping in contact - it’s also a great place to advertise, and to launch new trends. Most recently, something called the "veneers check" trend was popular on sites like TikTok, where young adults have been showing supposed before and after photos when undergoing veneer procedures. Unfortunately, the trend gained widespread critique when dentists revealed that the before photos were for crowns, not veneers. But that doesn’t mean the veneer trend isn’t still popular on social media. In fact, veneers are becoming increasingly popular among people called "influencers" on social media networks. Influencers are usually ordinary people who have a lot of social media followers. In exchange for exposure to a product, influencers accept money and free products from brands to ‘advertise’ or post about the brand. This can increase sales and ‘influence’ the influencer’s followers to become customers or followers of the brand.Lately, a new trend among influencers has emerged. Many are getting veneers to showcase their smiles in social media photos. This is, in turn, causing veneers to become more popular among regular people who follow them, including teens and young adults. This interest in oral health is great news- but there are a few things you should know when considering veneers for yourself or your teen.Veneers Require Some Tooth to Be RemovedThough your teeth aren’t filed down to the point of pre-crowned teeth, a thin layer of the tooth about the depth of a contact lens must be removed to adhere the veneer to your tooth. This is permanent, so you are committing to a life of veneers when you do it.Veneers Need to Be ReplacedMost veneers only last about 10-15 years, and will need to be replaced eventually, so prepare for paying for them at least two or three times in your lifetime.Veneers Don’t Replace Oral CareYou still need to brush and floss twice a day and go to the dentist at least once a year with veneers. You can also still get cavities with veneers. They do not stain, however, so you’re free to drink coffee and red wine without worry.CrownsIf you opt to go for crowns, those will likely need replacement in up to 20 years, too. Removing healthy teeth at a young age for crowns is dangerous, and could result in needing dentures as young as your 40’s, so if you are looking for a cosmetic improvement to your teeth, veneers are definitely the way to go.To Learn MoreTo learn more about if veneers are right for you, contact Dr. Peterson for a consultation today.
