There’s some bad news out of Tapei, Taiwan for men with obstructive sleep apnea who are trying to conceive. Researchers at the Tri-Service General Hospital at the National Defense Medical Center have found a connection between obstructive sleep apnea and male infertility. In a study of 4,607 men with infertility diagnosis from the Longitudinal Health Study, researchers found that the risk of infertility in men with obstructive sleep apnea or OSA in men was higher than in those who did not have obstructive sleep apnea, or whose sleep apnea was not treated.Obstructive sleep apnea is a condition that affects approximately two to nine percent of adults in America. Infertility is estimated to affect 15 percent of couples globally, with male infertility contributing 20 to 30 percent of those cases. The good news? Researchers also found that with treatment and early intervention of obstructive sleep apnea, infertility risk may decrease.Though the study suggested CPAP therapy, there are other ways to address obstructive sleep apnea that are not as invasive or uncomfortable.
