Talk about key features! Our fitness trackers can do some pretty cool things when it comes to monitoring our health and fitness. From counting our steps to monitoring our heart rate, fitness trackers like Fitbit are a great way to get an accurate picture of our health. But did you know that Fitbit may be planning to unroll some new features that could help save your life in other ways?Rumor has it, a new feature of the Fitbit will be sleep monitoring. While it already does have some sleep monitoring functionality, this particular feature is said to be able to monitor snoring, too!The monitoring so far is being tested on the Android version of the app and is rated in three categories: none to mild, moderate, and frequent snoring.Mild snoring is considered just ten percent or less of your sleep, moderate is considered snoring between ten to 40 percent of your sleep, and frequent snoring is 40 percent or more of your sleep. By monitoring your snoring, the Fitbit can alert you to potential problems such as sleep apnea.Sleep apnea is a sleep disorder wherein the affected party struggles to breathe during the night, stopping and restarting breathing and waking repeatedly. Persons with sleep apnea also snore, which this new app will hopefully detect. One drawback of the new feature is that it could pick up on your partner’s snoring, instead of yours, but the great news is that for people who sleep alone, it could alert them to sleep apnea they may not realize they have!Sleep apnea diagnosis can be especially difficult for those who sleep alone because often those who sleep with a partner are alerted to a problem with their breathing by their partner. While the sleep tracker is not available to all Fitbit users yet, it should hopefully be available soon. Thankfully in the meantime, there are other devices and apps which track snoring. If you believe you may have sleep apnea because you snore, or feel fatigued and depressed during the day, speak to your physician about conducting a sleep study.
